The Thing

Just doodling in my sketchbook and came up with this. My first experience with comics was in the 80's and my brother driving me around to local liquor stores and 7 Eleven's to check out the comic book racks. The stuff I liked the most was John Byrne's run on Fantastic Four and X-Men. I loved the Thing but hated how he always got his butt kicked by every other muscle bound character in the Marvel Universe.

Also, it's fun for me to draw non Star Wars characters every so often.

Durge!

A lot of the readers never quite warmed up to this guy. I always liked him and thought he had real potential. My writer on OBSESSION, Haden Blackman, really liked him too and we did our best with him-- I think his big fight with Anakin was one of the more fun parts (at least for me) of the Clone Wars.

Cap'n Jack

This was the busiest last few months of my year and yet I still managed to fit in a commission piece (patting myself on the back) ! Here's Captain Jack Sparrow on an 11 x17 bristol. I thought he was going to be pretty easy to draw since he's so easily identifiable and I could easily picture him in my head...nope, this turned out to be on of the toughest commission pieces I've done. I looked at a few pics of him online and for some reason, I really struggled with what his gear looked like (hey sometimes that stuff is hard to make out when it's in shadow). In the end, I think he came out okay.

Revan

Here's a sketch of Revan I did recently. It's fun to play around with markers and pens every so often since all the work I do on KOTOR is in pencil. The black ink creates such great shapes and strong contrast. I get such a clear idea right away whether or not the drawing is working out okay too, plus it's a lot of fun to spread white-out all over the place. :)

Jarael

Here's a sketch I did not too long ago for a friend of mine-- Anna Hybsier, an outstanding artist working in Germany.

I'm still finding my way around this character. I've always been happy with her design but not thrilled with the way I've portrayed her, I think I just needed time to get comfortable with her.

KOTOR #8 COVER

Okay, here's the finished version. I think Mike did a phenomenonal job on it. He does so many things well-- the soft blue on the planet and the glowing ring around the it, it looks cool without drawing too much attention from the main subject. He put a rimlight on both characters and that just helps give them that extra touch of roundness to their form. And the little sparkle from the blade-- a nice touch. These are just a few of the little things that Mike does to make a piece "pop," I can go on about it but I'd be typing all day :)

You can view the completed version with the logo and type on it over at the Dark Horse site. They've cropped it quite a bit and (to my surprise) actually have Rholan's blade coming in front of the logo-- that was something I thought they'd never do.
